The Husky Stories: Yulia K. on taking ballroom dance to the world stage
From the moment she could stand, dance was in her destiny. Having moved to Singapore eight years ago, Grade 11 student Yulia K. has been making her mark at the Canadian International School (CIS) and beyond. Competing in both the Latin and Standard ballroom dance programmes, she represents Singapore on stages all around the world.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a competitive ballroom dancer, and I have been at CIS since moving to Singapore from Russia. I compete in both the Latin programme, which includes five dances—Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso-Doble, and Jive—as well as the Standard programme, featuring Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep. My ultimate dream is to become the number one Latin dancer in the world, and every competition brings me one step closer to that goal.
What first drew you to Latin dance?
I started dancing at the age of five, but according to my mom, I was already drawn to movement as a baby—standing next to the oven at just six months old, using the handle as if it were a ballet barre!
As a child, I was drawn in by the art behind the dance from the colorful costumes and makeup to gemstones and high heels. I have always loved the performance aspect as well and remember my first competition feeling completely fearless, immediately falling in love with the energy and support of the audience.
What achievements have defined your growth as a dancer?
My proudest achievement so far is securing 3rd place in the world for the Solo Latin programme in the Youth category. I also won Gold in Cyprus for International Solo Latin Youth and Bronze in Croatia in the International Solo Latin Adult category. More recently this month, I claimed 1st place in both the Solo Adult and Youth categories at a local championship.
Pushing myself to compete in the Adult category before officially transitioning age groups and being able to face off against world champions is both inspiring and intimidating, but every challenge is an opportunity to grow. With an intense five to seven day competitive training schedule, I have learnt resilience, determination, and the mindset needed to perform at my best.
What’s the most exciting part of performing internationally?
Seeing my name on the scoreboard, stepping onto the podium, or watching the Singapore flag appear next to my name is always a proud moment. I also love supporting my friends during their rounds and building connections with dancers from around the world. Dance has taken me to so many incredible places—France, Belgium, Cyprus, and all across Asia. Each country brings something unique to the experience, and I enjoy learning all about the different languages and cultures at global competitions.
How has CIS helped prepare you for where you are today?
CIS has been incredibly supportive of my journey. When I first arrived, I only spoke Russian, but thanks to the English Language Learning (ELL) programme, I picked up English fully at CIS and can now connect with people from all over the world. I am currently studying Chinese in the Diploma Programme too, which has been so helpful during international competitions.
Beyond academics, CIS has provided many opportunities for me to express myself outside the classroom. The Arts department, in particular, has played a significant role in my personal and artistic growth. Whether through musical productions, school talent shows, or performances, I’ve been able to explore different aspects of stage presence, which has directly translated into my confidence on the dance floor.
The confidence and skills I’ve developed at CIS have not only shaped me as a performer but have also inspired me to give back. In the future, I aspire to teach younger students and share my knowledge, helping them grow just as I have. I hope to inspire future generations of dancers while continuing to learn and evolve through teaching.
What advice would you give to aspiring athletes?
Every sport has its own set of rules, but hard work is always the key to success. Never give up on your dreams, and don’t let results set you back. Stay consistent in your efforts and believe in yourself, whether you’re on the dance floor, the field, or the stage. Put yourself out there, give it your all, and success will follow.
Thank you for sharing your story with us, Yulia. We’re so proud of you and we wish you all the best in your journey to being world number 1!
