A Look Inside This Year’s Student Council Vision
With a focus on improving engagement, inclusiveness, and representation, this year’s Student Council is taking a hands-on approach to student life. President Deepanwita A., along with Vice Presidents Georgia C. and Risako S., share their goals for creating meaningful connections, and leaving behind a legacy of student-led change.
What excites you most about your new role?
Deepanwita: As president, I am especially excited to work with members on projects that improve facilities and daily life for students. I realise the impact student-led initiatives have on school management to make improvements to the school, and would love to help propose such initiatives with the Student Council.
Georgia: In my role as Vice President, I am looking forward to working with students from all ages and backgrounds, helping them grow as leaders in their own positions. I am also excited to help advocate for the student body, bringing about needed change to better the lives of students.
Risako: As Vice President, I am excited to lead and plan more initiative projects that help students in their daily life at school. From my experience with working with past executive teams, I learnt that my role is really important in ensuring all details and logistics are covered when planning events.
How do you plan to engage with the student body?
Georgia: We plan to strengthen our connection with students by listening actively and responding to their ideas. We have learned that communication is key, and value any feedback given, trying to create inclusive events, and promote active collaboration.
Risako: Student council plans to engage with the student body by consistently updating the students with upcoming initiatives or events they can participate in. This will include sending out posters and verbally bringing awareness to the events/initiatives. When we actually hold our events/initiatives, we hope to be there on the actual days to observe student reaction and get their feedback afterwards.
Are there any upcoming council-run events or initiatives you are excited about?
Georgia: Recently, we have planned, organised, and launched the Student Lounge, a space made for secondary students to study and relax. Currently, we are adding our finishing touches, adding some more furniture and decorations to make the space a comfortable and pleasant place for students to study.
Risako: An upcoming event we are excited about is the December dance for Grade 10 and 11 students, especially as it has been a while since we have planned a dance for the students. We plan to release details for tickets and themes soon! Get involved by checking ManageBac and the STUCO Instagram for announcements, events and new initiatives.
What message does the student council as a whole have for the student body?
Deepanwita: The creativity and ideation that make our school better is the responsibility of the Student Council, but also the greater student body. We encourage everyone to share your ideas with us or your grade representatives, and let STUCO be the vessel with which they come to fruition!
